May 21 is Independence Day in Montenegro.

Montenegro is one of the youngest countries in the world, it gained independence in 2006.

Montenegro, as a state, emerged in the 18th century.

It became the first country of the Balkan Peninsula to separate from the Ottoman Empire.

After World War I it lost its independence and became the part of the Kingdom of Serbia.

In 1929 Montenegro became a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Following World War II, Montenegro and other countries of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia became the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The latter dissolved after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Montenegro and Serbia formed Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The union of Montenegro and Serbia held a referendum on the independence of Montenegro on May 21, 2006.

About 55.5% of the voters were for independence.

Independence of Montenegro was recognized by Serbia and the countries of the United Nations.

The Parliament of Montenegro formally declared independence of Montenegro only on June 3.

Serbia officially recognized Montenegro as an independent country on June 15, 2006.
